L.A. Care Chief of Communications and Community Relations Joins Panel on Health Equity

The COVID-19 pandemic put inequity in public health under a spotlight, as Blacks and Latinos suffered more cases, hospitalizations and deaths. It also resulted in new efforts to address health equity, which means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Health equity is the topic of a webcast being hosted this week by The Conference Board, a non-profit business and research group organization. Francisco Oaxaca, the Chief of Communications and Community Relations at L.A. Care Health Plan, is among the panelists on the webinar titled The Role of Corporate Citizenship in Addressing Health Equity.

In addition to addressing the causes of health inequity, the webcast will focus on how companies are working to improve health equity through philanthropy that increases access to medical care, and how this philanthropy can address social factors that affect health outcomes. Oaxaca will discuss the sponsorship and grant funding that L.A. Care has committed to a wide variety of projects to advance health equity for its members and the communities where they live. During the pandemic, funding has been used to support food pantries, enrolling people into CalFresh, COVID-19 vaccine clinics and vaccination incentive programs in Black and Latino communities. Grants have also helped prevent evictions and have helped house those experiencing homelessness.

The webcast will also delve into how for-profit corporations can collaborate with government and non-profit organizations to improve health outcomes, which will ultimately benefit everyone.
