L.A. Care’s CEO Joins Important California Health Care Foundation Virtual Event

John Baackes to Address Health Care Inequities

California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) commissioned studies of seven markets across the state to identify key factors affecting the health care system in each. Today, CHCF will share the results from its report on the Los Angeles regional market during a virtual briefing.

L.A. Care CEO John Baackes is among three community leaders with a deep understanding of the Los Angeles health care market who will join the lead author of the Los Angeles market study for a panel discussion.

Baackes will offer insight on health inequity, which has been in the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic, and something L.A. Care is committed to addressing. The panel will also address the critical safety net role of the Los Angeles County government, the essential and growing safety net role of the county’s Federally Qualified Health Centers, and health care market consolidation trends.

CHCF started these market studies back in 2009, and the last one was conducted in 2015/16. Since that study, L.A. Care has continued to see considerable growth through both expanded enrollment in Medi-Cal under the Affordable Care Act and its participation in the Covered California marketplace. In addition to health inequities, Baackes will discuss that growth and the impact it has on access to health care for Angelenos.

The other panelists in today’s virtual event are the author of the L.A. market study, Jill Yegian, PhD, of the consulting firm Yegian Health Insights, Christina Ghaly, MD, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and Louise McCarthy, MPP, President and CEO of Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County. Kristoff Stremikis, MPP, MPH, Director of CHCF’s Market Analysis and Insight team, will moderate the panel.
