Children’s Oral Health: The Latest Fluoride Recommendations for Primary Care Physicians

March-April 2022

Providers can play an important part in preventing dental caries in children age five and under.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends primary care clinicians:

  1. Apply fluoride varnish to the teeth of all children as soon as the first tooth comes in.
  2. Prescribe oral fluoride supplementation for children 6 months and older whose water supply doesn’t contain enough fluoride.

Access the recommendation at Screening and Interventions to Prevent Dental Caries in Children Younger Than 5 Years.

Please continue recommending visits to a dentist and talking about good oral health with our youngest members and their caregivers.

Fluoride varnish applied by a qualified managed care primary care provider may qualify for a Proposition 56 payment. For more information, visit our Proposition 56 Supplemental Payments web page.
