What is SABIRT?
Screening, Assessment, Brief Interventions and Referral to Treatment (SABIRT) is an approach to early intervention and treatment for people who may be at risk for alcohol and substance use disorders, which is available for members 11 years and older, including pregnant women.
We can show our members that unhealthy alcohol and substance abuse can be avoided and that there are ways to get better.
When Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) see patients, you should use validated screening tools to identify if the patient is a risk for alcohol or substance use disorders. When a screening is positive, you should conduct an assessment, provide brief interventions and refer patients to treatment.
This screening should be done every year and can be brief, taking only a minute or longer for a full discussion.
For more information regarding screenings and assessments you can visit our Behavioral Health Services Resources web page.
L.A. Care members who need support for alcohol or substance use related issues can be referred to the Substance Abuse Services Helpline (SASH) 844-804-7500. Members will be evaluated further and offered choices to get help with their alcohol and drug issues.
Remember, early intervention can make a significant difference in patient outcomes!
