Individuals who experience ACEs are at significantly higher risk for nine of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S., such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and suicide.
ACEs can induce toxic stress, causing lasting mental and physical health challenges. By comprehending and addressing these underlying factors, healthcare providers can deliver comprehensive patient care.
Providers must complete Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) training, accessible on the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) website at https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/provgovpart/Pages/TraumaCare.aspx , and use screening tools, including the Pediatric Readiness to Learn Survey (PEARLS) or ACEs questionnaires, to evaluate risk factors for toxic stress. Based on the results, evidence-based interventions for trauma-informed care can be recommended.
Providers who complete screenings can receive a Medi-Cal reimbursement of $29 using HCPCS codes G9919 or G9920.
By integrating ACEs screenings into routine practice, we can uncover hidden trauma, provide essential support, and improve the health and well-being of your patents.
