Since December 2023, California implemented several Medi-Cal unwinding flexibilities to streamline the renewal process and help beneficiaries maintain coverage. While these flexibilities were in place, the majority of Medi-Cal beneficiaries in Los Angeles County had their Medi-Cal coverage automatically renewed each year.
As of June 30, 2025, all Medi-Cal unwinding flexibilities officially ended. This marks a major change: the majority of Medi-Cal beneficiaries in Los Angeles County will now be required to actively submit information to complete their annual Medi-Cal renewal.
This means that significantly more individuals are at risk of losing their coverage each month if they do not respond to requests for information from the County.
Here’s how you can help your patients stay covered:
To help prevent coverage disruptions, we encourage providers to share this update and the following messages with their Medi-Cal patients during visits, outreach, or follow-up calls.
- Update Contact Information: Make sure the county can reach them. Patients should confirm their current name, mailing address, phone number, and email at BenefitsCal.com or by calling 866-613-3777 (TTY: 800-660-4026).
- Check the Mail: Patients should look out for letters from the county about Medi-Cal eligibility. If they receive a renewal form, they must respond to keep coverage.
- Complete and Return Renewal Forms: If a patient receives a renewal form, they can respond by mail, phone, in person, or online—but it’s critical they act by the due date to avoid a lapse in care.
- Create or Log Into a BenefitsCal Account: Encourage patients to use BenefitsCal.com to get text or email alerts, manage their case, and submit documents online.
