Elevating the Safety Net Scholar Graduates: Where Are They Now?

Since 2018, every year, we have provided eight students – four from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and four from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA – full medical school scholarships worth nearly $428,000.

This program takes away a huge debt for community-minded physicians that can force them to choose high-profit positions over service in low-income areas.

See where some of our ESN scholar graduates are now.

Match Day

Match Day usually occurs in mid-March and comes at the end of Match Week. At the beginning of Match Week, medical students find out if they have matched into a residency program, and at the end of the week is national Match Day, when they find out where exactly they have matched.

Each year the number of eligible graduating medical students far exceeds available residency spots, so there is always a possibility that a student may not receive a match and will need to apply to receive a match the following year.

We're proud that Elevating the Safety Net scholars, Rachel Wahhab (ESN Class of 2019), Samantha Garcia (ESN Class of 2020), Precious Moman (ESN Class of 2020), Matthew Carter (ESN Class of 2021), Opemipo Akerele (ESN Class of 2020) and Marilyn Bravo (ESN Class of 2021) were matched this year.
