The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) issued a health update on September 24, 2024. This advisory shares information about prevention strategies for Mpox.
Key Messages
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health update to provide additional information regarding the ongoing outbreak of clade I mpox in Central and Eastern Africa and outline mpox prevention strategies for U.S. travelers to these countries.
Healthcare providers are asked to recommend the 2-dose JYNNEOS vaccine series to any adult, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, if they are traveling to a country with ongoing human-to-human transmission of clade I mpox AND they anticipate having sex with a new partner.
In Los Angeles County, mpox cases have doubled with 52 cases reported in the last four weeks, compared to 24 during the previous four-week period. Approximately 70% of new cases in the past six months were individuals who were not vaccinated. JYNNEOS vaccine remains the most effective tool to prevent mpox among populations at elevated risk.
