Fun-filled days that include free health screenings and backpack giveaways
LOS ANGELES — A recent survey of more than 12,000 teachers found that having their own school supplies improves a child's self-esteem and their attitude toward learning. But the National Retail Federation reports school supplies can cost more than $100 per child. That is simply too much for many families.
That’s why for the fifth year in a row, L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest publicly-operated health plan in the country, is stepping up to help. L.A. Care is holding back-to-school health fairs at five of its Family Resource Centers (FRC), where backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to children.
"School supplies are critical for setting the tone for the entire school year," said Mabel Ponce, FRC Regional Manager. "When given the tools they need to learn, children can remain focused in the classroom and that will help them realize academic success."
The Back-to-School Health Fairs will feature many free activities, including:
- Health and developmental screenings
- Haircuts for the kids
- A rock climbing wall
- Face painting
- Balloon artists
- Raffles and more
More than 4,000 backpacks will be distributed over the course of the five L.A. Care Back-to-School Health Fairs.
