Denise's Caregiving Story

Denise and her grandmother Maria
Denise and her grandmother Maria

How long have you been a caregiver?

5 years.

Who do you care for?

My grandmother.

What are some of the things you do for her, as a caregiver?

I take her to her doctor's appointments, to run her errands, and help her with house chores like cleaning, laundry, and cooking. I also encourage her to stay active by walking and taking classes at local senior centers.

What have been some of the greatest challenges in your caregiving journey?

The greatest challenges in my caregiving journey have been maintaining a work life balance and finding community resources and programs that focus on helping seniors and people with disabilities.

What are the most rewarding aspects of caregiving for your grandmother?

Seeing her expression of gratitude and sigh of relief when I help her with something she otherwise would have trouble doing on her own, and helping her maintain her quality of life and health so she can continue enjoying precious moments with our family.

What advice do you have for other caregivers?

Be your own advocate and don't be afraid to ask for help!
