L.A. Care Stands United with Health Care Leaders Against Medi-Cal Cuts to Protect California’s Working Families

L.A. Care Health Plan strongly opposes proposed Medi-Cal funding cuts that would jeopardize health care access for the more than 14 million Californians who rely on it, and this week co-signed a letter to members of the California Congressional Delegation encouraging them to reject these harmful cuts to the safety net.

As the largest publicly-operated health plan in the country, we serve a diverse community of more than 2.3 million Angelenos who rely on Medi-Cal for essential care, from children and pregnant women to seniors and low-income working families. These cuts would harm not only the 41% of Angelenos who are Medi-Cal recipients, but also the economy and the broader health system, driving up costs for everyone.

California’s Medi-Cal program is one of the most cost efficient in the nation, ensuring affordable care while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Federal proposals to cut Medi-Cal funding, impose work requirements, or shift costs to states threaten Medi-Cal’s stability. These cuts would reduce coverage, limit access to doctors and mental health services, and eliminate critical benefits like dental and vision care.

Medi-Cal isn’t just about healthcare—it’s about economic stability. Most non-senior adult Medi-Cal enrollees are working individuals—retail workers, caregivers, agricultural works, and restaurant staff who keep our communities running. Without Medi-Cal, their health and livelihoods are at risk.

Voters in California made their priorities clear by overwhelmingly passing Proposition 35 in 2024, reinforcing the need for increased Medi-Cal funding. Additionally, national polling shows broad bipartisan support for Medicaid, which is what Medi-Cal is called at the federal level, recognizing its vital role in providing affordable care.

Protecting Medi-Cal means safeguarding our health care system, ensuring stability for working families, and strengthening our economy. We remain committed to supporting policies that strengthen, not weaken, access to care for all Californians.
