The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), one of our nation’s most respected institutions, founded by Congress under President Abraham Lincoln, is hosting a workshop in Oakland, California today titled Exploring Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and Health Equity Commitment and Approaches by Health Organization C-Suites. Alex Li, MD, the Chief Health Equity Officer at L.A. Care Health Plan, is among the healthcare leaders who will explore how DEI and health equity commitments are defined and supported to achieve internal and external goals.
Li, who was appointed the health plan’s Chief Health Equity Officer in February of this year, plans to share a number of his priorities and approaches in the position. These include:
- Determining how to build health equity on top of L.A. Care’s existing mission
- Having a health equity plan to help focus on target areas
- Holding L.A. Care accountable to deliver on health equity
Participants in the workshop will discuss challenges and successes in implementing DEI and health equity roles and work at healthcare organizations. NASEM hopes to send everyone away with some best practices for implementation and metrics to measure success.
The one-day workshop is part of NASEM’s Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity. The roundtable holds two workshops each year, which delve into a wide variety of issues relating to health equity, specifically concerning racial and ethnic populations.
