This Brings the Health Plan’s Total Commitment for Such Equipment to More Than $2.6 Million
To ensure more equitable health care, seniors and people with disabilities (SPD) must have access to services that are equal to those received by a person without a disability. That means clinics and doctor’s offices must have equipment that is accessible for people with disabilities. But surveys and observational studies have found that fewer than 40% of medical offices have disability-accessible examination tables or weight scales. Today, L.A. Care Health Plan announced it has invested an additional $465,000 through its Accessible Equipment Fund Initiative for in-kind awards of adaptive exam tables and/or scales for community clinics and practices that serve a high volume of L.A. Care members and other community members who identify as SPD and other differently abled individuals.
“L.A. Care Health Plan serves more than 240,000 members who are classified as Seniors and People with Disabilities,” said John Baackes, L.A. Care CEO. “To ensure these members and others have access to high quality care, we have made multiple investments to eliminate barriers to care and ensure that our providers are able to offer these individuals proper exams and treatment.”
This new funding commitment follows two earlier investments totaling more than $2 million that provided the accessible equipment needed to serve vulnerable residents in Los Angeles County. The 24 community clinics and physician practices approved for accessible equipment valued up to $35,000 are:
