Dr. Alex Li on Panel Addressing Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency
Fierce Healthcare, a publication that delivers healthcare business and policy news, is hosting its annual two-day Fierce Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Forum starting today. The virtual event will include a panel titled Addressing the Crisis: Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency and Its Impact on Healthcare Systems, where Alex Li, MD, Chief Health Equity Officer at L.A. Care Health Plan, will share steps the health plan has taken to address the crisis.
Gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and adolescents, and it disproportionately affects communities of color in the United States. Recognizing the crisis, L.A. Care has launched a wide range of projects to promote gun safety. The health plan has collaborated with community partners for a billboard campaign promoting gun locks, distributed free gun locks at various events, hosted Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses that provide firearm safety training for clinicians, and advocated for gun safety legislation.
Joining Li on the panel are:
• Kim Byas, PhD, Vice President, Community Engagement & Impact, Center for Health Affairs
• Chethan Sathya, MD, Director, Center for Gun Violence Prevention, Northwell Health
• Cassandra Crifasi, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor and Co-Director, Center for Gun Violence Solutions, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
• Matthew Cook, President and CEO, Children’s Hospital Association
• Moderator: Angus McQuilken, Co-Founder, Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence
The Fierce Healthcare forum provides a platform for leaders across the industry to drive transformative change and advance diversity within the healthcare industry. Other panels at the forum will focus on topics like value-based care, partnerships to enhance community health, inclusive leadership, inclusive marketing and communications, and more.
