L.A. Care Health Plan Receives National Community Leadership Award

Los Angeles– America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Foundation has awarded L.A. Care Health Plan the 2009 Community Leadership Award. AHIP is a national trade organization with a membership of over 1,300 health plans that provide coverage to over 200 million Americans. This prestigious award recognizes L.A. Care’s Seniors and Persons with Disabilities (SPD) Initiative for investing $1.5 million to improve physical access to care, provide health education, and conduct community outreach.

Funded through L.A. Care’s Community Health Investment Fund, the SPD Initiative has improved physical access to care for approximately 228,000 seniors and persons with disabilities by providing wheelchair-accessible scales and height adjustable exam tables for more than 60% of Los Angeles County’s community clinics. In addition, over 2,000 seniors and persons with disabilities have participated in new health and wellness programs, and more than 1,000 Spanish-speaking individuals have received support and education from trained, culturally-sensitive community health workers, called promotores.

“This award tells seniors and persons with disabilities that L.A. Care and our provider community are committed to breaking down barriers that keep people from getting the health care they need,” says Elaine Batchlor, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of L.A. Care, the nation’s largest public health plan. “Receiving this national recognition is an honor for all of us.”

Each year, academic and philanthropic leaders examine the vast array of services offered by AHIP member companies and choose the very best to be honored. The Community Leadership Awards showcase organizations that demonstrate excellence in community outreach by identifying a specific problem in the community, establishing creative approaches to address the problem, and successfully leading community partnerships toward collaborative solutions.

In 2001, L.A. Care’s Board of Governors established the Community Health Investment Fund to strengthen the safety net, improve community and public health and expand health insurance coverage. To date, L.A. Care has invested over $80 million into community-based health initiatives.
