KTLA covered Project Angel Food's launch event for the new statewide Food is Medicine pilot program. The program will provide 1,000 Medi-Cal patients who have congestive heart failure with free, low-sodium fresh meals at no cost to them. The pilot will document how medically tailored meals can lead to better outcomes and lower health care costs.
L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest publicly-operated plan in the country, awarded a grant of $150,000 to Project Angel Food to support the pilot program's activities in L.A. County. The funds from L.A. Care will be used for a refrigerated delivery van, a driver, and one of the registered dieticians.
