Diabetes is a complex condition that requires chronic care. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) published the 2020 Standards of Care to provide a comprehensive update on diabetes management. This resource can help guide health care providers when considering pharmacologic therapies for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent evidence has shown a benefit of combining a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor or glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist with metformin in patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease or who are at increased cardiovascular risk.
