A Special Message from the CEO about the proposed American Health Care Act

With the recent unveiling of Republican lawmakers’ plan to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), there has been no shortage of opinions on the proposed changes and how best to move forward.

After a careful review of the proposed American Health Care Act, we at L.A. Care are most concerned about 1) the new Medicaid funding formula being too restrictive; 2) the burdensome impact on beneficiaries of the six-month Medicaid eligibility re-determination requirement; 3) the elimination of the Individual Mandate; and 4) the change in the Exchange premium subsidy formula. These are significant changes that will certainly impact our organization. But more importantly, they may compromise the level of care that is currently afforded to our members.

To continue the progress we have made under the ACA, it is critical that the replacement plan not create instability for our members and health care providers.

As conversations in Washington, D.C. continue to shape the bill, we are hopeful that our lawmakers will take into further consideration the needs of all Americans who gained coverage as a result the ACA.

L.A. Care members remain our top priority – and we are fully committed to preserving their access to comprehensive health care coverage.

It is uncertain whether any of our concerns will be addressed in the final bill. But one thing that is certain is that L.A. Care will continue to be a powerful voice for ensuring access to health care for the more than two million Los Angeles County residents we serve.
