L.A. Care Joins Collaborative Effort to Reduce Unnecessary ER Visits

Potentially preventable hospitalizations add about $31 billion annually to the nation’s health care spending. That’s more than four million hospital stays.

L.A. Care Health Plan, along with the State of California, the Medi-Cal Managed Care Division and 22 other contracted health plans, is launching a Health Education Campaign to reduce the number of Medi-Cal Managed Care members who use the Emergency Room (ER) for avoidable visits. An avoidable visit is a visit which could have more appropriately been managed by a primary care provider in an office or clinic setting.

It’s a fact that our nation’s and our county’s ERs are overburdened and overcrowded. But what can doctors, specialists, and clinics do to help?
