Inglewood, CA -- L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation’s largest public health plan, celebrated a ribbon cutting and preview opening of its Inglewood Family Resource Center today. The new Center, which will provide free health education and exercise classes to the Inglewood community, is located at 3111 W. Century Blvd., at the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard, and is open from 10 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, and on Saturday from 9 am to noon.
"There are more than 104,000 L.A. Care members living within five miles of the new Inglewood Family Resource Center," said L.A. Care Health Plan CEO Howard Kahn. “They now have access to a full array of free health education and exercise classes, health screenings, member services and assistance with health care coverage.”
Kahn spoke at the opening today, which was attended by L.A. Care Health Plan providers, partners and distinguished city officials. Sylvia Drew Ivie, chief of staff for Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas presented Dr. Klitzner, board chair, with a proclamation acknowledging the importance of the free health education for county residents, and Inglewood Mayor Roosevelt Dorn, along with Inglewood Councilman Daniel Tabor from District 1 and Councilman Ralph Franklin from District 4 welcomed the new Family Resource Center to the city.
"The opening of this facility could not be more timely,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. “As our economy has floundered, an alarming number of families have lost job-based insurance. This Center will offer these and other families vitally important services, from assistance in filling out applications for free and low-cost health coverage to health education classes."
In addition to free health education and exercise classes, the Center will provide vital assistance in navigating and understanding the health care system, as well as free periodic health screenings for blood pressure, weight and vision. Free health education classes include: parenting workshops, healthy cooking demonstrations, asthma and diabetes disease management, healthy living, weight management, nutrition, dance and Pilates. A Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) worker will be available at the Center by appointment to help visitors with applications for WIC, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and Healthy Kids programs. The classes will start August 1, 2009; all other services are now available.

Among the L.A. Care community partners who will offer education and classes are Great Beginnings for Black Babies, Weight Watchers®, Black Women for Wellness and the Lula Washington Dance Academy. In addition, local Inglewood artists will have the opportunity to showcase their artwork in the Center.
Prior to designing the services and selecting a location, L.A. Care Health Plan gathered information from community residents, clients and various stakeholders about what would best serve the needs of the Inglewood community. This information and feedback influenced the design and placement of the Center, as well as the services that are now being offered.

Más de 61,000 hispanos podrán obtener clases y servicios de salud gratuitos
Inglewood, CA – Hoy L.A. Care Health Plan, el plan de seguro de salud más grande del país, celebró una ceremonia de inauguración y apertura en su Centro de Recursos Familiar de Inglewood. El nuevo Centro, el cual ofrecerá clases gratis de salud y de ejercicios a la comunidad de Inglewood, está localizado en el 3111 W. Century Boulevard, en la esquina de Crenshaw Boulevard. El Centro está abierto de las 10 de la mañana a las 7 de la tarde, de lunes a viernes, y los sábados de las 9 de la mañana al mediodía.
“Más de 61,000 hispanos miembros de L.A. Care viven a 5 millas del Centro de Recursos Familiar de Inglewood,” aseguró el CEO de L.A. Care Health Plan, Howard Kahn. “Ellos ahora tienen acceso a una gama de clases gratuitas de salud y ejercicios, exámenes de detección, servicio a miembros y asistencia los seguros de salud.”

Aparte de las clases de salud y de ejercicios, el Centro va a proveer asistencia para facilitar el manejo y el entendimiento del sistema de salud, así como también exámenes periódicos de la presión, peso y visión. Las clases de salud incluyen: talleres para padres de familia, clases de cocina, manejo de enfermedades como el asma y la diabetes, clases de cómo vivir una vida saludable, control de peso, nutrición, clases de baile y Pilates. Un empleado del Departament of Public Social Services (DPSS) estará disponible en el Centro sólo con cita previa para ayudar a los visitantes con sus solicitudes para los programas del WIC, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families y Healthy Kids.
