L.A. Care Health Plan Hosts Community Celebration to Commemorate Medi-Cal 50th Anniversary

L.A. Care Health Plan invites you to attend a community event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Medi-Cal on Thursday, October 13. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 808 W. 58TH St., Los Angeles, CA. It will feature remarks from local elected officials and Medi-Cal leaders, health care resources from a range of community organizations and fun activities for children.

“As the only Medi-Cal health plan focused exclusively on serving Los Angeles County residents, we take great pride and responsibility in meeting the health care needs of our members,” said John Baackes, CEO of L.A. Care. “The significant milestone we celebrate today is a great reminder of how far we have come to ensure quality health care for those who need it most – and it reinvigorates us to continue to work hard for a healthier L.A.”

Since 1966, Medi-Cal has served as a critical safety net for California’s most vulnerable populations. It has helped create healthier communities and protected public health by providing care for tens-of-millions of Californians who – despite their critical health care needs – would not otherwise have access to a doctor, hospital care, immunization, nursing home care, prenatal care and other necessary services.

“The Local Health Plans of California is a proud sponsor and partner of this event to help shine a light on the positive impact of Medi-Cal in our local communities” said Brianna Lierman, CEO of Local Health Plans of California. “This event, and others like it across the state, are raising awareness about what Medi-Cal, and the organizations and providers who serve and support it locally, are doing to help make communities healthier and safer.”

The 50th Anniversary event will also help highlight the important role of local health plans in administering Medi-Cal. These not-for-profit plans were created by local communities – counties, clinics and other safety net partners – to ensure Medi-Cal beneficiaries have access to care through mission-driven and publicly accountable health plans.

L.A. Care is one of the 16 not-for-profit local health plans that provide access to high quality Medi-Cal health care services to patients in their local communities. L.A. Care serves nearly 2 million of Los Angeles County Medi-Cal managed care beneficiaries annually.
