County Supervisor Gloria Molina Joins L.A. Care's Board of Governors

LOS ANGELES –L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation’s largest public health plan, announced today that Gloria Molina, chair of Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and First District representative, has been nominated to L.A. Care’s Board of Governors. Molina replaces the Honorable Don Knabe, who served on the board for 10 years representing Los Angeles County.

Molina brings 20 years of experience leading public efforts that have increased access to health care resources and improved the quality of life of thousands of L.A. County residents. In 1995, Molina was instrumental in securing $1 billion in federal funds to rescue L.A. County’s public health care system. Molina also helped fund a capital campaign to complete the $1 billion, 1.5 million square-foot, state-of-the-art, LAC + USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights. 

“I am committed to working with my fellow board members to ensure that L.A. Care continues to effectively provide high-quality health care services to low-income and vulnerable populations in Los Angeles County,” says Supervisor Molina. 

Other New Board Members Are:

Dr. G. Michael Roybal, Medical Director of three Comprehensive Health Centers in the LAC+USC Healthcare Network; Roybal also serves as co-chair of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ Disease Management Oversight Team and is committed to maintaining and growing patient-centered delivery systems that improve the quality of care of its ambulatory and chronic disease patients. Roybal represents one of four Los Angeles County seats.   

Michael A. Rembis, President and CEO of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center; Rembis has over 25 years of experience serving in leadership at both for-profit and non-profit hospitals. Rembis spearheaded the expansion of these healthcare facilities, which now provide access to broader health care services for thousands of residents in Los Angeles and Riverside Counties. Rembis represents the Private Disproportionate Share Hospitals. 

Mark Gamble, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC); With over 15 years of experience, Gamble has worked with HASC’s 165 member hospitals in areas of public policy and advocacy, performance improvement, and education. Gamble represents the Private Non-Disproportionate Share Hospitals.  

L.A. Care Appoints New Officers

Dr. Walter Zelman, chair of the Department of Health Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles, has been appointed chair of L.A. Care’s Board of Governors.

Zelman leads a 13-member stakeholder board, which includes representatives of community clinics, hospitals, federally qualified health centers, doctors, members, advocates, and Los Angeles County. Zelman has been an L.A. Care board member for seven years, including a three-year period as vice chair.

Dr. Thomas Horowitz,osteopathic physician at Good Samaritan Hospital and St. Vincent Medical Center, has been appointed vice chair; Philip Browning, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services has been elected treasurer; and member advocate, Mario Ramos, has been elected secretary.
