America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) featured "L.A. Care Trains Caregivers So Dual Eligibles Can Live Happy & Healthy at Home," a blog by L.A. Care CEO John Baackes. In the piece, he talks about L.A. Care's pilot program that will train 900 caregivers to specifically assist dual eligibles so they can remain as long as possible in the comfort of their own homes.

Dual eligibles often have the most complex and costly needs, but trained caregivers can help enhance the health and happiness of these extremely vulnerable people. The caregiver becomes more active in the member’s care and, ultimately, it supports our objective of allowing members to stay in their homes as long as possible.

The pilot program is a partnership with the California Long-Term Care Education Center (CLTCEC) to provide training and education to In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) caregivers of L.A. Care's dual eligible members. The 10-week course teaches caregivers CPR, first aid, medication administration, nutrition and personal care — skills that will help members’ overall well-being at home.

The program also trains caregivers to be key liaisons with health care providers on early detection of changes in the member's status, where even a small variation from the norm can signal a bigger health problem. L.A. Care and CLTCEC recently wrapped up the second trimester of classes, having already trained over 570 caregivers.
